Business data migration to NAS storage

A shared folder on an ageing computer can become essential to the whole office. We plan the move to suitable NAS storage, organise user access and verify file workflows before the old source is retired.

First establish what is being moved

NAS can be practical for shared documents, but it is not an automatic replacement for every server or application. We check whether the source contains ordinary files, databases, active projects or folders with special requirements. If an application vendor specifies the storage arrangement, we verify a supported configuration before moving it.

NBG TEAM supports businesses in Belgrade and New Belgrade moving from an old computer, another NAS or an agreed storage source. If the primary aim is collaboration within Microsoft 365, we also consider SharePoint document organisation.

Preparing the destination and permissions

  • Sources, volumes, data types and existing permissions.
  • NAS hardware, capacity, disks and network connectivity.
  • Shared folders and user groups.
  • Source retention and a protective copy before changes.
  • A pilot transfer and a method for reconciling changes during migration.

Copying folders does not prove that permissions have transferred correctly. Identity mapping depends on the source system and sign-in method. We confirm who should be able to read and change each area with the responsible business contact.

Transfer and user switch-over

A representative test set

We check names, paths, permissions and opening representative files. Unsupported items are addressed before the final transfer rather than hidden in a general copy result.

Moving users to the new location

In the agreed window, we reconcile final changes and connect users to the destination. We establish when writing to the old location stops so that two competing working copies do not develop.

Checking data and backup

Handover includes a transfer and exception report, checks of an agreed document sample and permission tests with user accounts. Network paths and shortcuts are checked when included in scope. The old source is retained under the agreed plan until your business accepts the result.

RAID and NAS availability do not replace a separate backup. Backup arrangements and restore testing should be agreed before the NAS becomes the only working data store.

Cost and information for a proposal

File volume, source count, permission complexity, network speed and the required interruption window affect duration. The proposal identifies any equipment, disks and backup work separately. Send an initial inventory without business files so we can arrange the review and access method.

For the wider service, see servers and nas storage. Our IT services pricing page explains billing; the scope of this project is confirmed in a proposal.

Questions about this service

Do we need a new NAS?
Not necessarily. We review the model, disk condition, support, capacity and business requirements. If the existing equipment is unsuitable, a purchase recommendation is a separate item.
Can you transfer a business application database?
Only using a method supported by that application and agreed with its vendor. Copying active database files is not a default migration procedure.
Are old files deleted after copying?
Not automatically. Source retention, success criteria and any later deletion are agreed with the responsible person after verification.
